Small talk & networking

Start conversations, keep them going, find common ground and exit politely.

A2

💡 Tips from the pros

  • Safe topics: the event, travel, weather, food, the city, work in general. Avoid politics, religion and salary.
  • Ask open questions (What… How… Why…) instead of yes/no questions.
  • Answer + add detail + ask back: "Yes, I came from Berlin. It was a quick flight. What about you?"
  • Show interest with short reactions: "Really?", "That sounds great!", "Oh, interesting!"
  • Exit politely: "It was great talking to you. I should go and get ready for the next session."

Listen to each phrase, then press the mic and say it.

Starting

Hi, I don't think we've met. I'm…

Are you enjoying the conference?

How do you know the host?

Is this your first time here?

Keeping it going

What do you do?

How did you get into that?

What's it like working in…?

Have you been to … before?

Reacting

Oh, really?

That sounds interesting!

Me too!

No way! / Wow!

Ending

It was great talking to you.

Shall we connect on LinkedIn?

Here's my card.

Enjoy the rest of the conference!
